Pretty Edwardian postcards [Sep. 17th, 2007|09:30 pm]

[Current Mood |apathetic]

I used to have a fondness for the top floor junkshop of Affleck's Palace in Manchester. The only thing they ever sold cheap was postcards...I found a few of them in an old box a few weeks ago and decided to scan them.

No nudity, but still very pretty to look at.

Some of them have been touched up over paint specks and such like.

They're all English by the way. ^.^ Just anticipating questions in advance. I suppose they're all music hall actresses, but I don't know who any of them are.
Judging by the stamps on the back, they're Edwardian. :)

Murder Pamphlets 18-19th centuries [Feb. 12th, 2007|04:58 pm]
Promenade of Wonders

0rchid_thief
Коллекция книжек с "правдивыми историями о преступлениях, судебных процессах и казнях" 18-19 вв.

...The collection includes examples of a variety of genres, such as execution sermons, contemporary trial transcripts, confessions, and biographies. These pamphlets document the changing perception of the murderer from a repentant sinner to a monstrous deviant. The vocabulary of mystery and horror, which has replaced that of human sinfulness, has shaped contemporary reactions to murder.
Murder Pamphlets

The poison fiend: life, crimes & conviction of Lydia Sherman (the modern Lucretia Borgia), recently tried in New Haven, Conn, for poisoning three husbands and eight of her children; her life in full! (1878)
Все-таки среди женщин были серийные убийцы - например, Лидия Шерман ("современная Лукреция Борджиа"), отравившая 3 мужей и 8 детей.

DC, Atlas District, Palace of Wonders is rumored to have American Dime Museum pieces on display. Not sure what part of the museum's collection will be on display, but it is a carnival-sideshow themed club, so it will most likely have only those related pieces from the collection.

You are cordially invited to Baltimore, MD May 13 2:30PM; [Apr. 17th, 2006|03:36 pm]
Promenade of Wonders

arxacies
For an outdoor picnic with Mssr. Edgar Allen Poe at his current place of residence at the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetary, 509 W. Fayette St., Baltimore, MD at 2:30PM. This is being set up by the creators of the event Saloncon(information can be found at www.saloncon.com)

We will be offering space and, depending on the level of response that we get, I might have a bit of wine and cheese(I will be calling a winery in the Hudson Valley in New York to see if they have a spare bottle of the ice wine that is so good), however, it would be unwise to depend on this.

We will be bringing our accounting books so if one would want to pre-register we will have that availability for you(and, as the vox populi, I will be giving a suggestion to give attendees a small discount if they give us money at the event). This aspect I will be consulting with our financial manager to get more information.

What I can promise is myself, quite a large number of flyers, and I will answer any questions about SalonCon you may have. I will also be bringing a book of Poe for a reading and encourage others to bring their favourite authors as well. If we are not reading or answering questions about Saloncon, we will be discussing Poe and whatever else comes to mind.

If you are planning to attend, please RSVP as a comment here with your e-mail address.

Baltimore, Saturday Feb 11, 2006 12-8pm.

American Dime Museum
From the website:

In order to participate in Station North's Open House Day, the American Dime Museum will OPEN FOR ONE DAY ONLY on Saturday, February 11th, 2006 from noon to 8pm. Call 410-230-0263 for more info. Admission will be FREE to all. Donations would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On December 31st, The American Dime Museum closed indefinitely. While the Museum has remained "Baltimore's Best Non-Art Museum" (City Paper 2000-2005), entertaining and educating thousands of enthusiastic visitors, our inability to find any funding for the most necessary operating expenses is forcing our closure. Since we became a 501C3 non-profit corporation we have unsuccessfully exhausted all of our efforts to solicit any operating funding, and with the ever-escalating costs of rent, insurance, utilities, and so much else we can no longer continue, even as an all volunteer organization. I personally want to thank so many organizations and individuals for their praise, support, attendance, and volunteer efforts that I can not possibly list them all here, and I will write each expressing my appreciation for all they have done to make the Dime Museum the most talked about museum in Baltimore. In closing I must add that it is difficult to say good-bye to a City and an audience that has made this one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Dick Horne
Director
American Dime Museum

Note: The Dime Museum collection will remain intact and is not for sale.
